Answer:
Wow, you are in the exact same situation as me. I am a South Indian (a Malayali to be precise), introverted guy who speaks tuti-phuti Hindi. The main problem for me is also the gender, esp for inanimate things like रà¥à¤à¥ (feminine, so मà¥à¤°à¥ रà¥à¤à¥) and à¤à¤ªà¤¡à¤¾ (masculine, so मà¥à¤°à¤¾ à¤à¤ªà¤¡à¤¾). Another problem is that I sometimes forget to use proper pronoun while giving respect(especially 3rd person like à¤à¤¨à¤à¤¾ instead of à¤à¤¸à¤à¤¾) . I don't actively try to improve my Hindi, since I've hit a point of diminishing returns and it's not that useful for me to speak perfect Hindi anyway. Even so, my Hindi has improved a lot over the past 3 years at Varanasi to the point that I find it more comfortable to speak Hindi over English with friends. Some tips that I find useful are: Speak Hindi with your friends. It is not that hard to make friends even if you are a Southie in the North (from experience). Ask them to correct you if you make a mistake. Whenever you hear a new word, idiom (muhavra), ask them about the meaning. Be patient. Learning a language is not an overnight task. You will make mistakes a lot. You don't need to be embarrassed. Ask for the correct usage, take care in future. Watch Bollywood movies. Don't read newspapers if all you want is to speak Hindi. Watching news is helpful. For me friends were the most helpful. They teased & corrected me a lot. Having spent the last 3 years in boy's hostels in Varanasi, the only problem is that my spoken Hindi is not very polite

First of all congratulations. You understand Hindi very well. You have already covered half of the distance. Secondly, cheer up. Not many who speak in Hindi (actually Hindustani, and now a days Hinglishtani), use the correct grammar. Most of us make mistakes even though we have been talking in Hindi since early childhood. Many of the points have already been covered by and he has provided you with the websites as well. I will tell you a few other things: Please understand that Hindi is never spoken in its pure form. It is very difficult to converse in pure Hindi. Hence, use of a few English and Urdu words are allowed. For example, if I go on to say ''Krupya us roshni nalika ko karyaanvit kar dijiye', no one will understand. It simply means "Please, switch on the tubelight." So, in modernized spoken Hindi we say, '' Please, tube-light on kar do". So, start learning the language this way as this will benefit you more. I am telling you this because when you try to learn Hindi from dictionary and websites, you may fall prey to the literary Hindi, which is now a days restricted only to the books or Hindi newspapers. The main motto of any language is to make the other person understand your feelings. Being introvert is never going to help you in your learning. So I request you to feel free to talk in Hindi to anyone and everyone who understands it, even if they are complete strangers. Let them make fun of you. You are not going to see most of them again in your life. Once you have shed that inhibition, learning becomes a fun-process. I suggest you to read a little everyday. Even a paragraph on daily basis would suffice. Here, I beg to differ with Abhimanyu. Always start with the basic and simple books and school books offer you just that. Your problem with masculine/feminine will be solved without you even realizing it. Also, reading novels is the advanced level because novels use many difficult sentences and metaphors. Translations won't help you because then you will be learning the language in which it is translated and not Hindi (normal psychology.) Mirror is the best partner you can get. Read aloud from the book. That will give you confidence. So, go on and have fun with the language. I am glad that there are people out there who are willing to learn Hindi at times when English is taking its toll throughout the country.

Thanks for A2A. I would agree with . You look pretty decent in Hindi speaking already. But then language is the only form of knowledge the learning of which never stops. The only method to learn a language is to practice it. Read, speak amd write, in that order. Now coming to Hindi, I am very proud to say that Hindi is perhaps the most and maybe the only scientific language in the world. That means whatever we speak/read is exactly what we write. There are no exceptions in pronounciation like we have in English or any other language (for eg. To and Do have a different pronounciation than So despite having a similiar syllabic structure). I repeat NO EXCEPTIONS in Hindi. That makes it much easier to learn. I found a site on the web that looks pretty cool to me for learning hindi. http://www.learning-hindi.com/ You can try that. And start reading newspapers and magazines on a regular basis. That will work wonders for you. Will help you learn and absorb faster. :)

First of all thanks to the person who asked me to answer this one. I would love to give suggestions about my mother language, and surely want to help the lady to be able to speak proper Hindi. I come from a 'Hindi Bhashi' which means a land where Hindi is spoken pradesh, State, so have something to do with Hindi. :) Now first answers to your questions then The help. I am really desperate ko bolte hai, mai bahut jyada utsuk hoon. Secondly Hindi bolne me koi bahut time nahi lagta, jab sonia Gandhi seekh(learn) sakti hai, to aap kyun nahi. The best way to learn Hindi or any language is reading. But reading is only possible when you actually know how to write it. That is whats the script used. Now for that first you have to learn the basics of Hindi language, how are the symbols pronounced and so on. Speaking a language can be done, by learning basic conversations, By listening to people. But if one want to read and write then it actually takes a lot of effort. And to be precise in any language, one has to be able to read and write, and then only one can learn to speak it properly. Now, it can be guessed that you know simple Hindi words, can converse with a Hindi Bhashi even though your grammar may or may not be correct. Next step is to learn the basics of Hindi. Start from the very first step, that is taught in schools. Take a book from nursery or lower KG of Hindi, and start learning the Hindi varnamala. When you have learnt how to pronounce them and write them of course, then start reading some easy Hindi story books and statements. You can find them online too. These are things meant for beginners. When you can read those simple statements, and stories easily, Move up to comics' in hindi. Comics' are actually a source of deep learning. First of all it increase your concentration, secondly you can also see the visual of what is written, which further enhances the meaning, and you get a picture in mind, whenever you speak up some word. When u can read those books fluently just like you read english, or your mother tongue, you will more versed in Hindi than half the population in India. My second suggestion is use Hindi in daily conversations. Anything which we learn, can only come in practice and at ease to us, only if we use. It will be difficult for you initially, and your friends might even laugh at you, but don't loose heart. there is a saying in hindi karit karit abhyas ke jadimat hot sujan which means, that By hard practice even a fool can become a genius. And then you yourself seem to be an intelligent person, so you will come up easily in Hindi. Thirdly once you are able to read Hindi, start reading newspapers in Hindi. You don't need to buy them, there are a lot available online. Newspapers are those companions who converse with you in absence of any other. P.S. don't worry much about grammar and genders intially. Learning to speak and able to read should be first steps, everything shall be automatically corrected in due course of time. Just start with basic steps, and practice everyday, and I think you will be reading and speaking good Hindi within 6 months. much before than that even.

Believe me, learning spoken Samskrita from: http://samskritabharati.in/ will help you very much. A little background to support my belief: Some 20-years back, volunteer teachers from this organization ran a 15-days course at the local temple near our home in Delhi. And we kids could crack jokes on each other during the ensuing 2-3 months. The habit faded away soon because the seeds of habit didn't germinate in the absence of a conducive atmosphere. However, hardly 3 months back I met a 70-years old Tamil man in Delhi and offered him a lift in my car (because he was not able to get any auto-drive understand where he wanted to go). Sadly, this old man could not utter a single word except in Tamil. Driving about the town with him beside me, I started speaking to him in my tuti-phuti Samskrit (recalling my sketchy command of language from the 20-year old class that I took). And lo, we could communicate and understand each other! Boy! what a feeling that was!! Lurking somewhere in the back of my mind, now MY ambition is join the audio+email course again form http://samskritabharati.in/ and then be able to converse with all of my Indian brethren. So guys, go ahead and do it! Who knows we may become friends in person as well :)

Best way to learn Hindi (true for any language) is to speak it. It is okay if you make some mistakes. Given you know the fundamentals, watching movies will be a good option. There are a lot of bilingual dictionaries available online. One such dictionary is ShabdKosh http://www.shabdkosh.com/ You can refer to it if you do not get any word. Try to read some simple books. May be second third standard story books. They will focus more on fundamentals than beauty of language. I assume, you live in a place where most people speak Hindi. I am sure you will find a few people who will understand that you are learning. So try to speak with them and ask them to correct basics. (This is the best way, but you said you find it difficult to make friends in the first place because of language) Please feel free to ask for any help in future. I appreciate the effort you are putting. Wish you good luck.

Hi there.... After reading your post I can figure out that you speak Hindi but not fluently and you don't know how to use the correct grammar... In Hindi I would say that, 'aapko tuti futi hindi bolni aati hai'... :P 1. First of all, buy a Hindi to English dictionary. 2. Since you know how to speak a little Hindi, the best way for you to learn to speak Hindi is to watch as many good Hindi movies as you can. A word of advice, watch the movie with the English subtitles on because in this way you can figure out what does a difficult sentence mean in Hindi by looking at the subtitles. (Skip the songs if you can, it will just mess up with your training.. :P) 3. You can watch Hindi news channels and/or read Hindi newspaper or e-paper. Always keep the dictionary near you while reading the newspaper. It will improve your vocabulary to a great extent. 4. When I started to learn to speak English I would always took basic sentences in the Hindi language and converted them to the English language. This will help you in improving your grammar. 5. Some people would suggest you to read the school text books but I personally think that it won't be of a great help. You just need to learn to speak in Hindi and not to learn the complete literature so avoid buying books (particularly school-like text books). I personally feel that they are less fun. You can buy the Hindi translations of some good novels. Apart from all this, you can look up the following websites for learning Hindi: 1. http://www.hindipod101.com/index.php 2. https://sites.google.com/site/hindispekingtree/ 3. http://www.linguanaut.com/index.htm P.S. Main aasha karta hoon ki aap apne lakshya mein kaamyaab hongi. Agar aapko aur koi madad ki zaroorat hai to bejhijhak aap mujhe quora par sandesh bhej sakti hain. Sabhi ka sabse acha.. Ok .. First let me ask you how did you learn your mother tongue ? I am sure it isn't through reading .. It is definitely through listening .. Being a linguist I can tell you that the best way to learn any language is just listen and speak .. Try to understand the crux of any sentence said in a particular situation ( you can understand it easily since you already know a good amount of hindi ), now remember the situation and a sentence said in that situation and whenever such situations arise just speak it out .. Just listen to people speaking hindi carefully an speak up .. Try reading a couple of hindi comic books and watching hindi movies along wit this .. And within 6 months you will speak perfect hindi :) All the best
