What is it like going to Yosemite on July 4th for a day trip?

Planning to go to yosemite national park on 4th july 2013 (thursday) for 1 day. I know it would be crowded, but can someone suggest, how can I get maximum out of this trip, avoid traffic and enjoy the maximum.

Answer:
Sorry, too late for 2013 but ill still answer. Yosemite National Park is crowded. The statement above assumes "Yosemite National Park" means the main valley and it also assumes you are visiting on a summer holiday weekend. Yosemite and the surrounding Sierra mountains are hundreds of square miles, with room for all - pull out a map, throw a dart at the green-colored area and chances are you'll hit upon an incredible spot nearby. SUMMARY: visit somewhere beside the valley. If you must visit the main valley(if you've never been then you MUST go at least once) then go any time after Labor Day or before Memorial Day. You'll have the place to yourself and the mountains are just as tall. SUMMARY: go off-peak season. Side note: I recommend NOT traveling on holidays out of sf - you end up driving home with everyone else and stuck in traffic for forever.

I went on the 4th of July weekend and it wasn't bad. There was a line of cars waiting to pay at the main gate, but once we were in, we lucked out and found a parking spot. Walking around the Valley was easy and the buses made it convenient to get around. Just park as soon as you can in the valley; and don't try to drive from place to place. Just walk/ bus it.

This is way after 2013, but for any July 4th - be prepared for crowds. If you are going for 1 day only, it might not be too bad, but you can see most everything in Yosemite Valley in just a couple of hours. It is all around you, so I would then recommend either driving up to Glacier Point, and exploring the area there, or driving up to Tuolumne Meadows, and exploring that area. Tuolumne Meadows, has a bit fewer crowds than the valley. For a real treat, get on a hiking path, away from all the crowds. If this is your first trip you should definitely see all the attractions, but the backcountry is the real treat in Yosemite.
