Do you really believe in Mark Zuckerberg statement that Facebook is making world "more open and connected"?
-
I believe that people are showing only good part of their life on facebook and pretending to be some else rather than who they truly are (Virtual life). No doubt Facebook is making world more connected but in case of "openness" i don't think so. Infect i recently read some articles about "how the mass proliferation of so-called âperfect livesâ on Facebook can cause rampant envy and distress". http://www.wbur.org/2013/02/20/facebook-perfection What are your experiences about this?

Answer:
I think it probably does, to the people who use it (I rarely do, but obviously many do). People are more open about what is going on in their lives, and obviously more connected. Has it changed the world as much as zuckerburg claims? Doubt it. Two caveats.... If it wasn't Facebook, it would be something else. And they might have done it better. (Whether it would be Myspace, or even Google, or not I don't know.... But someone would be doing it) Facebook may encourage openness regarding the personal lives of its users, but it is not open in many ways.... I'd rather that social networking used open protocols rather than being a propriety system under one company's control.

Facebook is creating a platform to support Zuckerberg's concept of openness. They aren't there yet. But they will be sometime in the not too distant future. They don't just know what you tell them directly. For a lot of users, they know basically everything. How much time they spend on the web. Where they go, what they see, how much time they spend looking at it. Where they are when they do these things. If you go to FB regularly, and use FB logins on other sites regularly, they know you better than anyone but your closest family. Maybe even better than that. Even if you never actually tell them anything about yourself. How long before there's another "privacy policy change", and you suddenly see "John Doe went to {insert porn site here} and watched 2 short movies about {insert your fetish here}" in your timeline? Zuckerberg doesn't think people should have secrets. He would rather not allow people to have secrets. That's his idea of openness, and he's making good progress towards that goal.

Yes actually, to both statements. I'm not a fan of Facebook but people are certainly much more "open" because they are allowing their identities to be viewable to random strangers. FB is most definitely allowing people to be more "connected" because they are able to learn about each other without actually talking to each other. One would need to invest time and energy into staying connected with another person back in the day. That's different now. You can simply friend the person, and their details and voluntary updates are out in the open. Do I like the idea of forsaking my privacy and allowing acquaintances to see into my world without any effort? No. That's why I don't use Facebook. It's okay to not like Facebook, but to blatantly deny something that is as simple and obvious as what it does... well... that doesn't make much sense.

No, I don't. It's a simplistic statement which smacks of arrogance and hyperbole. Most people in the world are not on Facebook. Many who are (myself included) rarely use it. The few who do use it more frequently, do so sparingly. And even the heavy users seemingly use it to do things which they could just as easily accomplish using email, texts or phone calls. Facebook was a great idea which has devolved into cultural morass. Most of the "cool kids" have left the room and the people who have stayed really don't seem know what it is that they should be doing there. That hardly seems like something which changing the world in any significant manner. A prediction: Failing some type of "eureka moment" involving Facebook's interface or its utility, within 18 months to 2 years, it will become a slightly more organized MySpace. By that I mean that everyone will know what it is, but most people will no longer bother with trying to use it

Well, I also believe that Facebook is making world more connected. But as far as openness concern I doubt. By Facebook we get virtually connected with people living other part of globe and forget to even introduce ourself with people next to our house. This is where the openness contradicts. I am not sure if Mark has any another definition of openness.

Facebook is definitely making the world more connected; nowadays I can talk to a ten-year-old friend quite easily, something quite difficult some time ago. And I do agree that people are thinking a little more critically thinking though Facebook; after all, whenever I post and comment, I have to think about my post's implications. What will people think? What's the point? How does it affect my family and me? And the general public's analyzing skills are also improving though the social-network; what exactly is John Smith trying to say in this post? These are some items that the vernacular of Facebook is able to accomplish. But the negative is that people cannot really be open on Facebook. They have to think about what others will think. You really cannot express your honest opinion or creativity without being highly criticized.
