    GPS provides native altitude. It doesn't need too compare with a topographical database. Margin of error on a consumer GPS or cell phone varies by how many satellites are visible (and what cell towers are visible to enhance accuracy). The more satellites you are connected to the more accurate the reading will be. There are apps that reads out the values for device orientation, gyroscope, accelerometer, location based on IP, magnetometer and the values for orientation (device, interface). This pretty much sums up all the different ways a 'smartphone' can give you direct / indirect information about Altitude. Take an example of SMTH App on Google Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.carrotpop.www.smth The Android game uses accelerometer to measure the phone’s altitude when tossed upward and displays the result in meter, assuming its free fall ended up in literally good hands :)

If you have recent smartphone (e.g. Samsung S6 or iPhone 6) it might have a barometer sensor built-in. With a barometer, if you have two pressure readings (e.g. at sea-level vs up a mountain), then the pressure difference can tell you the height difference.  There are apps that can use the barometer in this way.See http://www.math24.net/barometric-formula.html for more on the maths.

Might not be prefferered but the easy solution is to use google Elevation API .Once you gets Latitude,Longitude from Location service you can simply call:-https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/elevation/json?locations=8.53333932<latitude>,<longitude>to get the elevation of that location
