Why is it so difficult to find toilets at night after 9 pm?

Raffaele Sollecito told police that Amanda left at 2100 the night of the murder and returned home at 0100 the next morning. Was this his formal legal position throughout his trial and appeal?

  • One of the disappointing aspects of both Sollecito and Knox’s books is that neither released the early versions of their alibis. This is a red flag that these alibis were not in sync. Darkness Descending, p. 90 (paraphrased) Profazio briefed Mignini on 5 November 2007 about discrepancies in Knox and Sollecito’s alibis from the previous day. Both said they left the cottage at 1800. Knox claims they went straight to Sollecito’s flat and that she read Harry Potter in German. Sollecito claimed they went for a two hour walk around the old town. http://www.corriere.it/english/articoli/2007/11_Novembre/07/perudia_murder.shtmlThe first to admit to talking “a whole lot of rubbish” was Raffaele Sollecito. He was questioned at the police station at 10.40 pm on 5 November, two days ago. He had already been interviewed after Meredith’s body was discovered but claimed he did not know what had happened. “I was out with Amanda”, he had said. Then he realised that the situation had changed and decided to change his version of events. 3 November interview with reporter Kate Mansey - Sollecito claims he and Knox were out partying with a friend: "It was a normal night. Meredith had gone out with one of her English friends and Amanda and I went to party with one of my friends. RS statement at Matteini Preventative Custody Prelim Hearing  8 November 2007 At 18.00 we went out and went to the center passing by Piazza Grimana, Morley Fountain and Piazza C(avallotti). (Cor)so Vannucci. We entertained at the center until 20.30-21.00 and then we went to my house, I do not remember what time I had dinner, I think I had dinner together with Amanda. I remember Amanda received messages on the phone and answered. I do not remember if the messages arrived before or after dinner. Then she told me that the pub was closed, unlike every Tuesday and Thursday and then did not have to go to work that day. I'm not sure if Amanda went out that night, I do not remember. I remember that night the pipe dropped under the sink and the sink while I washed the items in the kitchen the floor was flooded, I tried to dry the floor and then at the suggestion of Amanda I let it go. I then worked on the computer and then I went to bed. I received a call from my father, who calls me every night before I go to sleep, I do not remember if he called me on the phone or on the phone...//...I confirm that on the night of 1/11 I spent the night with Amanda. I do not remember if Amanda went out that night. At 20.30 we were at my house. I messed up. I remember Amanda must have returned with me. I do not remember if she went out....//...I do not remember exactly if that Thursday night she went out, I remember well that I have been on the computer more or less up to 12.00 per me the spinelli . I am sure that I ate, I was at home and that Amanda slept with me.   RS Diary entry 8 November 2007 My problems start from this moment because I have confused memories. Firstly, Amanda and I went to the centre going from Piazza Grimana to Corso Vannucci passing behind the University for Foreigners and ending up in Piazza Morlacchi (we always take that road). Then I do not remember but presumably we went shopping for groceries. We returned to my house at around 8 ‐ 8:30 pm and there I made another joint and, since it was a holiday, I took everything with extreme tranquillity, without the slightest intention of going out since it was cold outside. I donʹt remember what time I ate, but I certainly ate and Amanda ate with me. The questions asked by the agents of the Squadra Mobile made me remember that that day the water pipe under the sink had detached itself and this fact makes me very suspicious since it is not possible for it to detach itself. In any case, the fact is that it flooded half the house. I remember that I surfed the Internet for a while, I may have watched a film and then you called me at home or you sent me a goodnight SMS [messaggio] at least [comunque]. I remember that it was Thursday and therefore Amanda had to go to the pub where she usually works, but I do not remember how long she was gone. I remember that she subsequently told me that the pub was closed (I have serious doubts regarding the fact that she had gone out). I am straining myself to remember other details but they are all confused. Another thing of which I can be sure is that Amanda slept with me that night   The judge questioned me today and he told me that I gave three different statements, but the only difference that I find is that I said that Amanda persuaded me to talk crap [dire cazzate] in the second version, and that she [quella] had gone out to go to the bar where she worked, Le Chic. But I do not remember exactly whether she went out or not to go to that pub and as a consequence I do not remember how long she was gone for. What is the big problem? I do not remember this, for them, important detail, therefore they should stop bothering me and start investigating her [non mi rompessero e facessero le indagini su di lei]. I tried to help them in the investigation by trying to remember and now I am the one taking it in that place [where the sun never shines...]. It would have been better if I had done nothing and had limited myself to saying that she had remained at my house. I would have spared myself a lot of anxiety. Let’s talk about something else that it is better...   RS Diary entry of 12 November 2007 The facts are taking their course and I am slowly realizing that due to the fact that you, father, sent me a goodnight SMS [messaggio] that night and also due to the fact that in the first statement I made I said that Amanda had stayed with me all night long, I must admit [dire] that I said a 90% really stupid thing [grossa cavolata] in my second statement. And that is: 1 that fact that Amanda persuaded me to say something is not true [è una cazzata] and I have said so repeatedly to the judge and to the Squadra Mobile; 2 reconstructing [the events] I realize that it is actually very likely that Amanda was with me all night long, never going out. And I will certainly not be the one to lie in order to help the investigation and get everyone into trouble for no reason [gratuitamente]. Or better still, it would be fabulous for me if Amanda has done nothing, since it is [diventa] impossible that they find any traces on my shoe and on my knife and this story will have a happy ending for me and for you...   RS Diary entry of 18 November 2007 They are keeping me in jail because of the kitchen knife that has a DNA trace belonging to Meredith. It seems like a horror movie... Thinking back and remembering, I remembered that that night father sent me a goodnight SMS message to be indiscreet [indiscreto, sic] (knowing that I was with Amanda), then, the following day, Amanda kept on telling me that if she had not been with me, she would be dead now [a quest’ora]. Thinking and reconstructing, I think that she always remained with me; the only thing I do not remember exactly is if she went out for a few minutes in the early evening. I am convinced that she could not have killed Meredith and then come back home. The fact that there is Meredithʹs DNA on the kitchen knife is because on one occasion, while we were cooking together, I, while moving around at home [and] handling the knife, pricked her hand, and I apologized at once but she was not hurt [lei non si era fatta niente]. So the only real explanation for that kitchen knife is this one. I am worried [non sono tranquillo] because if they found such a small [così irrisoria] trace they can find other [small traces] on the rags and so on... A)       7 Via Della Pergolia – situated on Viale Sant'Antonio, the residence of Meredith Kercher. B)      Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, 110, the residence of Sollecito. C)      Piazza Braccio Fortebraccio, commonly known as Piazza Grimana where Guede and Curatolo frequented. Across the street is the School of Foreigners, Knox would pass several times a day. Knox and Sollecito passed Piazza Grimana the the evening of 1 November 2007. (RS diary) D)     Corso Pietro Vannucci, the main pedestrian boulevard in the old town which Sollecito claims they strolled the evening of 1 November 2007. (RS diary, Matteini hearing) E)      Piazza Francesco Morlacchi, the destination of Knox and Sollecito on the evening of 1 November 2007. (RS diary) F)      Piazza Cavallotti and nearby Morley Fountain. the destination of Knox and Sollecito on the evening of 1 November 2007. (Matteini hearing) G)     Piazza IV Novembre, the main square in Perugia, where Knox stood every Tuesday and Thursday between 2100 and 2200 to pass out flyers for Lumumba’s bar Le Chic. This is the square where Knox first met Guede. (WTBH) H)     Via Ulisse Rocchi, 37, Il Cedro, the kebob shop where Guede ate between 2000 and 2100 the night of 1 November 2007.   It is in the old town (D, E, F, G, H) that Knox’s cell phone was pinged at 2018 on 1 November 2007.    “20:18:12: Amanda receives the SMS sent to her by Patrick Lumumba, which let her off from having to go to work at the ‚Le Chic‛ pub on the evening of 1 November. At the time of reception the phone connected to the cell on Via dell’Aquila 5-Torre dell’Acquedotto sector 3, whose signal does not reach Raffaele Sollecito’s house. The young woman was therefore far [i.e. absent] from Corso Garibaldi 30 when the SMS reached her, as she was walking in an area which was shown to be served by the Via dell’Aquila 5-Torre dell’Acquedotto sector 3 cell. This point of her route could correspond to Via U. Rocchi, to Piazza Cavallotti, to Piazza IV Novembre, bearing in mind that Lumumba’s pub is located in Via Alessi, and that Amanda Knox would have had to travel along the above-mentioned roads and the piazza in order to reach the pub.” (Massei p 322)

  • Answer:

Note: This "question" has been changed countless times. It's actually an answer.  Let's look at the technique (and see my original answer below that): 1. It begins by referring to Raffaele and Amanda's witness statements as "alibis." They were not even suspects on Nov. 2, 2007, when they made the statements. They both said they spent the night together. However, they were barely questioned about where they were. Again, they weren't suspects, just people who'd known Meredith and were in the house when her body was found. 2. It claims that they should have printed the witness statements in their entirety, somehow within the narrative of their books. It claims that's "a red flag that the alibis don't match." Yet both said they spent the night together in the witness statements. And nobody prints entire documents in their memoirs. 3. Instead of actual court testimony, we get old  tabloid stories, police leaks and outdated books. Examples:  *Darkness Descending. An anti-Amanda Knox book printed in 2010 and not updated since. *A very old Corriere story that's just a police leak. Even then, it only "implies" that Raffaele said this or that. We now have his exact words and don't need to depend upon snatches leaked to the press (often inaccurately) in early days of the case.  * An 2007 English tabloid story about a meeting that the writer supposedly had with Raffaele. Popular on Amanda Knox hate sites. Even the writer acknowledges that the two could barely communicate, as Raffaele barely spoke English and she didn't speak Italian. * Two quotes from Raffaele's diary, in which he says Amanda didn't go out, which is what she said.  My original answer: Raffaele Sollecito's formal legal position, throughout his trial and appeal, is that Amanda Knox spent the night at his flat with him.  That is what he said when he was first questioned by police. During a lawyer-less all-night interrogation, he said that she went out. A few days later, he testified that he was wrong about that. He's maintained that formal legal position ever since.  His book is called Honor Bound because he has not wavered. No. This was an error. He was talking about Halloween night, NOT the night of the crime.
