What can I do with a degree in culinary arts and business?

What is a better choice for a bachelor degree: Liberal Arts or Business Education?

  • I'm half way through a Business bachelor degree and it's not working the way I imagined. Should I make a U-turn? Or can you just "provide" yourself a liberal arts education? Provided that loan debt are not involved in the equation. Please also consider this in European context. Really need to hear credible opinions from grown-ups as my friends are so glued to the average starting salary.

  • Answer:

Well I'm still doing my bachelor in computer science but here are my thoughts anyway. With the current job market in the majority of Europe, there are numerous Liberal Arts bachelors and masters, that spend more than 6 months looking for a job initially. The 6 months are important as it's been shown that people who spend more than 6 months unemployed after finishing their education, stand a higher a risk of being unsettled in the job market. By this it is meant that they risk having shorter employments and longer (and more) bouts of unemployment. Business bachelors are also affected by the job market, naturally, but I believe their situation is slightly better than the liberal arts bachelors. I can't quite recall the exact statistics, but the two employment rates aren't too far from each other (in Denmark). I would suggest sticking with the business bachelor, but taking courses within the field(s) of Liberal Arts that hold your interest. Such that your certificate will say business bachelor, but you can apply to a greater number of jobs, based on the qualifications you achieve in the liberal arts courses, if that is a possibility for you.

Thanks for the A2A. Since you are half way through I would recommend go all the way. A business bachelors degree is always better than liberal arts. Sometimes we can't see the light at the end of the tunnel and in your case you are ready to make a U turn. What is the guarantee that you will see the light you want to see at the end of liberal art's tunnel? You can always do after your business Bachelors what you wanted to do after liberal arts, plus a lot more. I don't see it a negative at all. You are just being demotivated for the time being, need a heads up.

Realistically in business in the US, one of two things are going to happen in your career: You're going with a big company or small/startup business. Big companies will eventually want you to get an MBA, so major in something else (anything else) as an undergraduate (preferably something that makes you a strong writer). If you go with startups, no one cares if you even finish the undergraduate degree. Smart to do it for the long run of your career, but it does make the point that what you major in doesn't matter at all to small companies. To a startup it's going to be all about skills and experience. To a small business it's going to be about experience--we're more willing to help with  you gaining skills, but we want to see extracurriculars that involve running things, wearing lots of hats, taking charge, working without supervision. I can't imagine it is all that radically different in Europe--business is business, but I'm afraid I'm not much help in that arena. Philosophy has made a huge comeback in business careers, and that's about as unobvious as it gets. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/05/why-philosophy-majors-rule_n_4891404.html

Why not do both?! I double majored in bachelor's degrees in Economics (that was the business degree available) AND Dramatic Art (which was the form of the arts I was most passionate about at the time). It is absolutely possible to study and balance BOTH art and business - in fact, I would go so far as to argue that it is imperative to understand both in order to be more successful at either one. I channeled my education in both subjects into a career as a successful film producer, and am now sharing that knowledge with other artists through my new book - The Productive Artist's Business Plan! http://theproductiveartist.com/books/
