Can you use recordings accidentally made as evidence?

Are recordings "made," "created," "taken," (other?) Trying to use the sentence: "Any recordings that were [recorded] at the scene"?

  • Answer:

At least in US English, you "make" a recording.

I'm going to disagree with previous answers and say that made or taken would sound equally good.  If you're not using the full phrase "video recording", you could also use recorded ("This video footage was recorded at the scene…"). Captured might also work.

I think "taken" sounds the least weird in the sample sentence.

You would "make" a recording at the scene. If you were a musician, or a musical group, you may be said to have created a recording. I think this would be most appropriate when referring to quite unique electronic "sound art". "Taken", in the sense you are thinking of, usually refers to measurements, e.g., "Andrew's physical measurements were taken by the nurse", or, "the scientists at Fukushima are taking measurements around the reactor site".
