What are different options in Law?

What are the best options if I want to practise law in the US?

  • I am currently enrolled in an undergraduate double-degree in Australia. In the first 3 years I am concurrently doing my BA and some actual law units (not pre-law). After getting my BA after 3 years I will need to complete remaining law units in 2 years to get a LLB. If I am interested in working in the US as a lawyer, would it be better to complete my double degree, or should I finish my BA then apply for JD in US? Or are there other options? How does LLM work in the US?

  • Answer:

If you want to practice law in the US, your best bet is to get your JD here in the states at an accredited law school; that opens the most options for you with the least hassle and bureaucracy.  An LLM is an advanced law degree here in the states, which is used more by academics or very specialty niche areas of the law.  It's possible in some states to use a foreign degree to qualify to sit for the bar, but you'd have to do your research to identify the precise states in which you want to practice and determine what their policies on foreign degrees is.This answer is not a substitute for professional legal advice....
