What is the best way to find a job?

What's the best way to find a new IT/Software job (if you already have one)?

  • Some options: 1. Use an anonymous "make me an offer" site like http://FiveYearItch.com, http://JobPoacher.com, or http://PleasePoach.me It's best to keep your name private, but still let the offers come in as long as they match your requirements.   2. Search job boards You have the most power if you drive the search yourself, choosing the employer and job that will likely work for you.   3. Turn to a recruiter Only a professional who's on your side -- working for you -- can make the best possible connection. 4. Ask friends Friends can tell you what's really going on in their workplaces; they can also give you the best possible recommendation. 5. Professional networking An off-shoot of the friends option, profesional contacts and referrals are preferred for premium jobs that haven't yet hit the light of a job board.

  • Answer:

I'd go to my friends and ex-colleagues first -- it gives the best  recommendation if they have a good job for you, though the options will be limited. If that doesn't work, FiveYearItch and JobPoacher bring in some quality offers. LinkedIn is good for info, but beware the recruiters!!!

Other answers

@Amelia has it mostly right, but I'd rank it as Search http://LinkedIn.com; Sign up on http://fiveyearitch.com/; Contact your personal network in that order. Contributing to GitHub and the  like  are useful when you do apply for a job, but  won't get you the moderate stream of quality offers which you need.

I don't know anything about option 1, but 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all good options. I would revers the order (start with 5 and work your way down to 2) since working with personal referrals are best, followed by working with a disinterested party (someone who is not paid to place you). If you are going to work with a recruiter, find someone who understands what you do - they don't have to be a coder, but if you are a software engineer they should not be calling you about a QA position based on a keyword they saw on your resume. If you are not comfortable speaking with them, move on and find someone else. One more thing I would recommend is to be on LinkedIn with a proper profile. If your LI profile is done right people should be contacting you about possible opportunities.
