Is a web design career rewarding?

An young-in-career engineer wants to explore a new activity related to web science; should she focus on learning web design, computer & web security or some other field?

  • This engineer is not currently assigned to a purely technical activity, but rather to project planning.  She is exploring web design, but has been advised this is a field over-run with others, while the security activity may have a better chance of quick assignment.  Since she has a 'technical inclination', perhaps there might be an even better recommendation?

I think this depends on whether you really mean "Web Science" or rather more generally "Web technologies". Web Science, as I understand the term, looks at understanding how systems grow/die on the Web, how the nature of the Web affects the systems and people that develop on it (and vice versa) and draws in people from outside computing/technology to gain better understanding of law, psychology, education, policy etc on the Web combining this with some of the engineering/technical skills of web-like systems such as security. Web design is a very peripheral skill within Web Science except in terms of understanding how it affects learning or engagement. Data science, coding, semantic web and another non-technical discipline would be the best ways into web science..
