What is the difference between social theory and sociological theory?

What is the difference between a mathematical theory and a scientific theory?

  • this question is sort of a followup to those arguing that 'string theory' is named appropriately , cite the fact that it is primarily a mathematical theory, and that the word 'theory' has different connotations in mathematics than it does in science. so my question is what exactly is the difference in definition of the word 'theory' inĀ  a mathematical context, as opposed to a scientific one?

  • Answer:

AFAIK, A mathematical theory would be something which is internally consistent. All the the equations in the theory are consistent with each other. It represents a world, which is plausible - even if it doesn't exist (or can't be validated) A scientific theory would represent the real world. Its internally consistent, as well as consistent with the world around us. It can be verified or validated. Thus string theory is a theory which is internally consistent, but can't be validated, even if its true.
