What does art develop?

How can I develop a sensibility to fine art?

  • Starting from tumblr I found my own favourite photographers, and can really be moved by a photo. But after watching a tv show (Dr. Who) about how Van Gogh art was strong, I realise I never felt something like this for fine art. How could I learn to appreciate/develop a sensibility to fine art?

  • Answer:

Live in a city with a good museum and go to the museum often - see the same pieces over and over - each time you will notice something more in them!

I'm going to pass on tricks and tips that my art and art history teachers have used in the past. 1. Looking at it in person. The arduous way of developing a sensitivity for art is to see large quantities of it, and to hold off passing judgment as long as you can; that way, you leave yourself open and responsive to it for longer. And take mental note of differences you observe, like how Titian painted differently (he tended to hide the individual strokes on his canvas, so not to break the illusion of the image) than Monet (who was interested in how the eye could synthesize separate colors) than Cezanne (who saw his subjects made up of planes of color). Look at how the Laocoon (with bodies twisted into impossible poses to express anguish) might be similar to Rodin's Burghers of Calais (with exaggerated, gnarled hands and feet to suggest hardship). 2. Train yourself by playing visual games. When you walk into a room in a museum, try to figure out  why all those works are hanging in the same space based on visual reasons (e.g. they all exaggerate the size of landscapes by miniaturizing things like people and animals; they're all overwhelming and intimidating sizes; they all have exposed or unfinished parts of the canvas). You can do this on tumblr too, compare and contrast two images you feel yourself drawn to before you post them. 3. Reading from experts. It's a lot easier having someone guide you through. Try Alain de Botton's the Architecture of Happiness. It doesn't specifically have to do with the visual arts, but it speaks about how much we all come to value aesthetics, even without knowing it, and how important it is for us as individuals and as communities. It was the summer reading book my high school art history teacher repeatedly assigned.

I will answer myself a long time after, before I found something really good : RijksStudio : https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/rijksstudio/83769--lois/collections The Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam numerised more than 150,000 art pieces, than you can browse, save, select few details... This is the first time I really enjoy going through art pieces. Have a look.
