What is the longitudinal and latitudinal extent of andaman and nicobar and lakshadweep islands?

How did India come to acquire the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep islands?

  • All the history textbooks I have read up till today have concentrated very much on the activities in mainland India without even cursory references to the islands. So how did they come to be a part of India?

  • Answer:

    Annexation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanhoji_Angre was The maratha navy general, feared by the British, Dutch and Portugese navies in the 17th and 18th century. He used the Andaman and Nicobar islands as a base to attack the European vessels. He was a badass who was never captured. (Side-note: The Indian Pirate in "Pirates of the Caribbean" is loosely modeled on Kanhoji) After his death, the Britishers established a colony there in 1789, abandoned it in 1796, and re-established a presence there (as a penal colony) in 1857 (to exile the Indian Mutineers). After being captured by Japan for a while during World war 2, Andaman and Nicobar islands were handed over to Netaji S and this is where the first flag of Independent India was hoisted. Since then, these islands have permanently been a part of India. well I can only speak about Andaman and Nicobar islands.... The islands where initially annexed by the Imperial CHOLAS...then after the disintegration of the chola empire...these islands where effectively left alone... Next came the Danish...they colonised the islands...somewhere near the 17-18 century...but they suffered enormous difficulties because of the prevelence of malaria...hence they sold their territory to the British... The British after the 1st war of independence ( 1857 ) were looking for a penal colony to repatriate the mutineers ( case similar to AUSTRALIA )...and hence a penal settlement was established here... After few years the NATIONAL MEMORIAL CELLULAR JAIL was built to house Indian freedom fighters...this was the condition till 1942. In 1942...during the 2nd world war...the JAPANESE conquered A&N Islands...( the brutality of the Japanese forces here is one of histories forgotten chapters )...after few years of this...the Japanese gave the administrative control of these islands to the INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY ( INA ) of Netaji... NETAJI PROCLAIMED THESE ISLANDS TO BE THE FIRST LIBERATED INDIAN TERRITORY & NAMED THEM AS SHAHEED & SWARAJ. BUT at the end of the second world war...the Japanese surrendered...and these islands came back into the British control... When plans for British withdrawal from India was made...there was a tussle between Mr Nehru and Mr Jinnah for the control of the GEO-POLITICALLY STRATEGIC ISLANDS ( read MALACCA STRAITS ) as it was almost equidistant to EAST PAKISTAN as well as MAINLAND INDIA... eventually Mr Nehru ( with support from the populace ) won... AND SINCE THAT DAY THE A&N ISLAND ARE A PART OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDIA.

Andamans were annexed by Brits but I am not much aware of how it came to Indian union than going to Burma or Malaya... May be the majority of Indian settlers there could ve...
