How do I search research papers while filtering out the self-citations?

Answer:
I know of one way to filter out self-citations when searching for research papers. You can do it if you search on . However, Scopus belongs to Elsevier and is only available to subscribers, unlike PubMed or Google Scholar, which are free. When you find an article on , on the right hand side, it will indicate the number of times this article has been cited in . Click on the number and it will open a citation page listing all the articles that have cited it. On this citation page, you will find a range of menu options on the left hand side that allow you to Refine results. You will see Author Name listed as one of the options. This usually includes the original article's authors. You can then select Exclude and choose to exclude select Author names and get a refined list of citations that limit or exclude self-citations.

Do you mean setting up a search that would weed out articles in which the author cites himself/herself as a source? There's no way to do that, as far as I know.

As far as I know, there is a beta version of an online tool that uses google scholar profile to filter out the self-citations. http://cids.fc.ul.pt/cids_3_0/ However, the catch word is "BETA" meaning there might be some inaccuracies. I performed my own profile and got entirely different results on 2 consecutive attempts. The most reliable source is Scopus, however, we all know that scopus doesn't provide accurate citation report. In my opinion, use the google scholar to check for the citation counts and rely upon scopus tool for self-citation exclusion until google scholar comes up with an advanced filtering options.
