Really interested in a career in advertising?

What should I do to get into Advertising as career?

  • I'm 24, a Computer Science graduate student. There's been a tiny feeling in my mind since all these years but it's been growing now that I'm treading the wrong path. I've been a little interested in advertising, read a couple of books on it, know Photoshop, designed a few not-so-public ads. How can I start working under some great advertising agency, preferably as part-time in the start?

First, I made the transition. Was a mathematician (2 degrees, but liberal arts side) who became a Sr. Software Engineer at General Dynamics. My transition led through outside supercomputer sales where I gained extensive experience working with customers and seeing how things sold (I travelled the world pitching the computers - outstanding training for making messages that people care about). Then I entered advertising on the strategic and consumer research side then later moved to also do creative work after starting my own agency. It sounds like you’re playing around in some of the visual arts programs. The question for you might be: where could you enter an agency?Tech is a huge issue for all agencies these days. You might be able to enter through a tech role (don’t know about the part time) then evolve into a visual creative role if that’s where you want to end up.In many ways, getting into a first agency in a role where you can do well is your most critical first step. From there you’ll learn far more about how agencies work and begin to make out a career better.

Thanks for the A2A.You are on the right track.Computer Science is the future of marketing. Before jumping into advertising understand the difference between marketing and advertising:In a nutshell: Marketing. The long-term plan that makes advertising executions and media placement effective. Advertising. The tactical short-lived executions that are intended to push buyers through the sales funnel. Both are important. But the marketing tech world is evolving.I've created ads for the greatest brands in the world. It's fleeting.Getting a part-time ad agency job in the creative dept at a quality shop is very, very, very difficult.Focus your talents on data-science, analytical strategy, causality, attribution theory and marketing tech you'll be more satisfied in the long run.DM me if you have a question.

If you apply to an agency with no previous experience you might get an intern position but it is highly likely that you will receive mundane tasks that you won’t enjoy because you don’t know specifically what you want to do at the agency.I strongly recommend you to build a small portfolio by yourself to at least get a junior position in an specific area, it also shows your initiative and that is always a big plus. You can just build a website, blog or a web app of whatever you like and try to get as much traffic as you can, this will automatically involve a lot of research in advertising/marketing and while doing this project see what you enjoy the most; Design, social media, writing, analytics, etc. Once you know what area you like the most, apply for that position at the agency and you will love your job! 100% guaranteed!

A proper answer depends on what department you are aiming for. A creative would have to approach this quite differently from someone trying to get into media buying.Generally though, you'll have to know a lot about your discipline and read up on the advertising agencies you hope to get into. Aim high. Don't undersell yourself because no one knows anything really. You may be lucky enough to get an internship, which means working for free. Do it, and if you do it well they may let you stay and even pay you enough money so you can eat. If that goes well, and you are happy to work very long hours, you could earn a lot of money at a very young age.
