Chess: What are some good counter openings as Black?

  • Looking for counter openings to the most popular openings for White

  • Answer:

By counter openings, I assume you mean a hypermodern defense. The rationale behind openings like the Grünfeld or the Pirc is to allow White to build up a large center and then undermine it through the use of pawn breaks and/or piece pressure. Some interesting hypermodern defenses are the two aforementioned ones along with the Modern Defense. If you meant an opening that has a reputation of ending decisively (1-0 or 0-1) then I would suggest the Sicilian Defense. The Sicilian has been played at the highest level for many years and the resulting positions are complex and unbalanced. It's also scored the best against 1. e4. Against 1. d4, the Grünfeld has an excellent reputation for being not only a hypermodern opening, but also an opening with solid counterattacking chances. The King's Indian Defense was also employed by Fischer and Kasparov for many years given its unbalanced tendencies.

Counter e4 with c5 for a sexy sicilian defense. Some think that this defense is the reason why d4 is the best opening move for white (as sicilian defense scores so well against e4).
