What career best fits my interests?
-
I am a 26 year old with an undergraduate degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies. I work professionally but do not feel that I am on the right career path for me. I would like to go back to school or pursue a job/career that better fits my interests but that would hopefully also have a reasonable job outlook in the coming years. I am asking for suggestions for careers that might be good for me. I have listed the topics I spend the most time reading, discussing and thinking about below. The suggestions I'm looking for do not need to incorporate all of my interests. I would be just as interested in hearing suggestions that exclusively to one of them. Thanks for the help. 1. Travel - This is a primary interest. I was able to spend 2 years living and traveling outside the country a few years ago which were some of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. I am more interested in cultures and differing ways of life than the tourism/hospitality aspects. I am married (to another travel enthusiast), so any suggestions that include travel have to be relevant to a married couple. 2. International Relations and Foreign Policy 3. Human and Urban Development. Human Rights Issues. 4. Animals and Widlife. Especially the relationship between animals and humans and the effect of the human way of living. Special interest in Snakes and Envenomation. 5. Camping. 6. Contamination, contagion, toxicity and disease (life-threatening/epidemic). 7. Beer. 8. The Environment. Natural Resources development and planning. Environmental Protection. 9. Religion, ritual, tradition, ancient culture.

Answer:
Wow! A spanish language graduate with an interest in travelling and beer. Tough life. It feels like you have a few choices. 1) Build up your skill set - Go back to school and get a good job. Expand your knowledge and expertise. Once qualified enough look for a job abroad. The pros are that you will have more money and experience while travelling around the world. The cons are that this will take time and may reduce your flexibility to travel in the future. As time goes on you will have more and more excuses not to travel. 2) Pack your bags - Buy a one way plane ticket somewhere (Spain, South America). Do some volunteering, live somewhere and embrace the language/culture. The pros are you will gain plenty of life experience from roughing it around the place. You can help the locals by volunteering. You can immerse yourself in the culture and the language. The cons are you may have limited money to spend too long away from home. It may be difficult to land the best job without real work experience, resulting in a possible shorter time away. 3) Stay put - Look for a job that faces off to spainish speakers. These jobs may include travel that will give you the security of a full time job, with the perks of interacting with others from a different culture. The world is shrinking and therefore this offers a good balance of options. You can obviously do all of the above.
