What is the best approach for me to get a job?

What should my approach be to get a marketing job at a startup?

  • Answer:

    1) Know your shit (aka have a strong marketing background); 2) Have a book of business demonstrating #1; 3) Network, network, network. Startups can't afford to waste time, money, or effort "bringing someone up to speed" on marketing.  Either you have something to offer them, or you don't.

You might want to consider joining an extremely early stage startup. I have a friend who joined a startup as a janitor right after they raised their first major round of funding. It's been about 4 years and now he's their VP of sales. He didn't have relevant experience but did show tremendous focus and initiative. You don't need to join as a janitor but early stage companies, without a lot of hierarchy can sometimes be a lot more flexible in hiring.

Come up with a strategy of how they can develop business ready when you talk to them in detail. Talk to some of their customers on their product lines to prove your understanding of the product and the market.
