What are some good "beginner level" data modeling/analytics approaches to kick start a data science/analytics team?

Should I start from junior Java Developer position or Datawarehouse/BI industry to become Big Data Engineer?

  • Hey there. I will be graduated soon from Computer Science and Engineering department . Moreover, I'm interested in Big Data industry as developer and I'm trying to improve myself with following some courses via coursera like; - Web Intelligence and Big Data - Computing for Data Analysis - MongoDB for Java Developers - Some courses from http://bigdatauniversity.com - Also entry level tutorials from internet ,and reading published papers by Google (like google file system, big table), Twitter (like twitter data analytics) .etc to gain deep insight about the domain. In Addition, I have a short experience ( well 6 months )  in Datawarehousing/BI department of a telecom company and now I may start in datawarehouse department of a startup company which is related to Hadoop. So my question is simple which job will be beneficial to become at least junior big data engineer. Thanks for every answer.

You never know where the trend will take you my friend. Reality is built on agility meaning you have to know "a little of everything and a lot of what you work in the moment". Having said that and considering your age - I'd recommend that you go for a position that will be more challenging for you and where you will learn more. You need time to figure our what you want to work in future. Good luck and keep us posted with your progress.

I am of opinion that before taking up any specialization, you should be good in your basics like programming, languages, algorithms, data structures etc. Hadoop/ Hive and other frameworks under the Hadoop Ecosystem umbrella can be learnt easily when you have your basics strong. A good knowledge of Java would help you to become a Big Data Engineer whose main responsibility is to implement  big data systems but If you are really looking forward to see yourself as Data Scientist in long term, I would suggest you to stay closer to data and see if people can let you play with it. If your only target is to solve huge data processing/storage problems, I would suggest you to join service based companies who provide Hadoop/Big data implementation.

Do you still work for the startup company which is related the Hadoop ?

Either of these will be good experience for you. The startup will probably be more chaotic and fast-paced. You will learn how to get things done right now (quickly) and not necessarily how to do them right (correctly). The Telco will probably be more focused on doing things the right way and taking a little longer to get it done.
