Seasonal work for Irish students?

Do the top 1% students mostly rely on their talents or hard work to sustain their positions?

  • I have studied at a TOP 2 high-school in my province, Guang Dong, China. Studying with some of the best students in my province who are able to rank top 1% in 700,000 students.  I noticed an interesting phenomenon: most of those top students spend equivalent time or even more time on entertainment compared to those students who rank after them. They play hard but still get a high mark in exams. In  most cases, when the teacher teaches us new knowledge, those top 1% students can quickly understand it and use it in their homework well, while common students can understand it after thinking for a relatively longer time. Hard work can help someone to rank in the top 10%. However, when it comes to top 1%, I wonder between talent or hard work, which factor plays a more predominant role?

    To be a good student, all you need is to master the contents in textbooks. At the high school level, if you have reasonable level of IQ and put sufficient time on it, there will be no problem. You can take the famous Hengshui No. 2 High School in Hebei as an example. To be the best, you need much more. How well can you concentrate on studying or playing? How creative your are? Do you have a broad scope of interests? Do you have necessary social skills? How many friends you have? Are you capable of working in a team? Can you be a good team leader? Can you make a good public speech? There is much more to explore outside the textbooks and this part is very challenging. There is not a standard routine to follow. You will need a good family background, talents, opportunities and guidance. Simply spending more and more time on study will never promote a good student to this level. This is my view.

hmm I think I know what you mean by hard working. They seem to be able to work regardless of how much they play. I believe this is because they can work very hard.  In a way, they give themselves no choice but to do well. They don't stop until they have finished. They will find a way to understand the material enough to ensure an A.

Top 1% in the Chinese education system could very well be something else than in e.g. the US or Europe, since it only reflects the ability to score well in the exams and tests you take. When I attended Chinese elementary school decades ago, memorizing was everything, but really understanding was a lot less emphasized, as was historically speaking for the civil service exams during the old imperial times.  Very useful later on when doing med school.  In my career it was a very useful tool, to have a lot of facts ready for use without having to look it up every time you need it, but understanding what one learned was far more important to do ones work well. Having said this, I think those top students have the ability to comprehend the matter to be studied faster, so have more time to "play". As a med school student from my second year on I reviewed everything taught regularly, so when the exams came up was more than ready for them, and to relax went to see a movie the day before the exam.

Both to sustain your position. You can get away with one for a brief period of time but to sustain it on a consistent basis you need both.
