much like being any other major, i suspect. You go to classes, take exams, and try to do well enough to graduate with the degree. The main addition is laboratory classes, which are unique to the sciences. Most classes are fairly large, especially in schools with good biology programs where a large number of students are on the pre-med track. You only get small class sizes in the upper level seminar and lab courses that are not part of the traditional premed curricumum (plant biology, evolution, genomics etc). Upper level classes like biochemistry and cell biology are fairly popular with the premed students, so they have 60+ people when I took them even though they were 300 and 400 level classes. One of the annoying things about biology is that it is fairly fact/memorization heavy even in upper level courses. There are some courses with problems (genetics, biochem), but a lot of courses (plant phys, cell bio, immunology) is simply remembering lots of facts about how biology works and trying to put them together into a cohesive picture. There are patterns and trends and logic, but they are a little harder to see than in physics and chemistry. My best experiences as a bio major was doing independent research in a lab. I learned much more about science and biology through that than through any single class just memorizing facts.
