What classes to take for architectual design?

Carnegie Mellon University: Is it possible for a non-design student to take design classes?

  • I'm an ECE major and I'm really interested in taking some Industrial or UX design courses, but the only non-major option that I've seen involves applying for a minor. Is there any way to take just a few courses through the college of design without fully committing yourself to an aditional major/minor?

  • Answer:

Yes. Communication/Industrial Design Fundamentals is open to everyone. I forgot the name of the course but there's a Color Theory class taught by Kristen Hughes that's open to everyone. I believe some photography classes are also open. You can always obtain the permission of the instructor for a course that's not normally open to you. However, studio typography and ID classes take up a lot of time even though they only count for 9 units.

Other answers

Yes but it's hard. Design has very limited space because of the interactive nature of their classes. It helps to be a minor or HCI double to get into some core classes (cdf, ixd) while with others if you're not a major sign up early and show on up day one (idf) because those who don't get kicked out!
