What would happen if you time traveled a very small amount of time into the past?
-
I've always been curious as to what would happen if someone were to travel a small amount of time (like 1 second) back in time. It could be either temporal or physical. But the physical time travel scenario is preferred. Temporal Time Travel: No copy is made of the traveler, instead the traveler replaces oneself, and takes the characteristics of their past self (e.g. The Butterfly Effect). The traveler is limited to their own life span. The traveler can change the course of time without paradox. Time paradoxes are unlikely in this type of time travel. Physical Time Travel: A copy is made of the traveler, and the traveler can interact with that copy, often leading to a time paradox (e.g. most plots that deal with time travel). The traveler is not limited to "when" they can go to. The traveler can not change the course of time, as every action they do ultimately leads to the future they know. They can't stop their past self from traveling, either. Time paradoxes riddle this type of time travel.

Answer:
Nothing would "happen." Since a single second would be almost imperceptible to the average human being then they would barely comprehend that any "time travel" had occurred. At best, the moment might seem like an instantaneous deja vu event and nothing more. This is likely why time travel stories avoid something like this as there would be no way that most people would even realize that it had occurred.

I once wrote a twitter microfiction about teleportation: The teleportation experiment ended with a bang when the test subject's mass suddenly occupied the same space as an equivalent volume of air. This would be the same if you travelled back in time, except there wouldn't be air, there would be an slightly younger version of yourself. But then the resulting mess would be sent back in time instead of the older you. This would either result in an even bigger mess, or more likely would cause a paradox destroying the entire spacetime continuum. Either that or nothing would happen since time travel is impossible ;D
