What major sports are played outside of the English-speaking world?

• I realized recently that I am only familiar with major sports from the English-speaking world. These include baseball, football, soccer, hockey, tennis, golf, basketball, rugby, and cricket. I'm sure I am missing some.   What major sports are played outside of the English-speaking world? By major, I mean a sport which might be televised in a particular country, or where a team might be sponsored. For example, in Japan, or Brazil, or China, are any major sports played which are native to those respective countries?

  Baseball is the de-facto national sport of Japan. Figure Skating is also a very popular spectator sport.   In China Table Tennis and Badminton are popular, as are diving and gymnastics (as spectator sports).   Badminton is also hugely popular in Indonesia and Malaysia.   In Malaysia and Thailand Sepak Takraw is a traditional variant of volleyball/football (soccer).   In Europe, Handball is apparently well-followed in Denmark.   In Sweden Floorball and Bandy are played alongside Ice Hockey.   Finland's national sport is a baseball-style safe haven game called Pesapallo. Belgium and the Netherlands have the largest followings of Korfball.   Water Polo is big in Hungary.   Egypt and Pakistan have always had some of the world's best squash players.   Field Hockey is the national sport of Pakistan.   Although they speak English in Ireland, you might also be interested in their two most popular sports: Hurling and Gaelic Football.   I'm currently writing up a proposal for a documentary series that combines elements of travel, sport and human interest. It's called 'The Sporting Planet' (working title) and is "an exploration of the world through the games we play". It will probably never get made since I am unknown in the TV industry but at least my research has enabled me to answer this Quora question, so my efforts have not been completely in vain. :-)
