What is the highest career within the government?

I am 25 year ECE Engineer working in IT industry. I am worried about my career a bit. My family is suggesting for a  government job. What shoud i do?

  • I had completed my B-Tech in 2011 from NIT Silchar and working for mobile apps company in Hyderabad, India.Money is good. I love coding and have huge interest in Web Development ( server side). Few days back when i went home , my dad is suggesting me for IES (Indian engineering service) job. He is saying government job is more secure and it has good reputation in society. He told me to plan about career like what i want to do? and how will i achieve those? Now i am confused. Please help me out. Thanks :)

My friend, you never worry for your career. You worry for security. If you are able to distinguish between these two, half of your problem is solved. If you choose something which you really want to do; it will give shape to your career & sense of insecurity will vanish. You can take up a job in govt. sector, if you feel your life has certain milestones that needs to be achieved at a certain age. For e.g job at 25, marriage at 27, kids at 30, house at 35 & so on. Same goes for private sector jobs, but the security of job even after non-performance will not be there. What your family is suggesting is the full-proof path to lead a life that millions of people prefer in India & are happy with that. So, ask yourself, do you want this? If the answer is yes, decide between govt. or private job & lead your life. If not, you become a ruler of options, rather than submitting to options.

Let me give you a perspective from fellow NIT graduate, who worked in IT field, in Hyderabad. If you are from NIT, you do recognise power of brands, since NIT tag must be getting you good interview calls. Also, you are working on latest technology, and might even consider other post-graduations like MBA or MS, M.Tech. Does IES as a brand gives you the same privileges in the fields that you like? For example- location of work, domain of work, Team, Boss, growth options, diversifying options in case you get bored of your job in few years? As a software engineer, and if you really like to be this, then you will have to keep learning, may be compete with others for some jobs, may be learn a new coding language in few years time, may be work on a different platform after few years. All this is destabilizing, but if it sounds fun to your coder-mind, then be it. There are at least a half a million others in your shoes, and they are dealing with insecurity of a private job, and they are loving it. Regarding Govt job, I don't see growth, I dont see a very stimulating work environment, I dont see a very good peer group to help you learn, I dont see each day as interesting or something to look forward to. I have seen many govt engineers in IT, ECE type of jobs, trust me-no fun there. Have you thought about your options to move ahead? Like people do MBA after IT jobs, or they go for MS or M.Tech to get ahead in their field. To be fair, I have never met an IES, nor have I been near to anyone who prepared for this thing. Infact, it sounds a bit weird to me that after being in such a high growth and high paying industry someone would want to join a govt job in same role. I mean, if you want to be an IAS, serve country, then its fine, but an engineer again? that too in Govt? That too in modern branches like ECE and IT? So first thing you can do is to hunt such IES people, may be who were in IT companies in Hyd, bangalore, and then made the move. What do they feel? Or, even more important, what do you feel about their lives, work, job? Do you want it?

My answer won't be as long as the others, but I hope it is of some help..   If you love what you do, and the money is decent, then you shouldn't worry about job security. The government jobs were appealing mainly for their pension which could guarantee a good post-retirement life. You can invest in some other private pension plans now itself and that will be taken care of. Regarding good reputation, yes, govt jobs once had a great appeal to them, but that's changing rapidly. You will have to explain that to your father. You can tell him that you may rise to a much better position in the private sector (without reservations) and would feel much more dignified doing work and earning, rather than just earning. Explain to him that you'll end up saving more and having a better lifestyle, you'll be more satisfied doing your own job, and more over, that you'll make sure you have planned financially for your future. That should do it, I believe.

ECE is a dual core branch in which you can choose either electronic side or software side. If you want  to go for a government job then try some firms like DRDO,ISRO,BARC. If you want to go in a private sector then you can choose HUAWEI,QUALCOMM, INTEL. Over all i suggest you to go into core side which gives you complete satisfaction for what you have studied for four years.
