  • Answer:

What they do is they clean out your nerves which run down each root and in the center of your tooth. You could have an abscess which means your nerve is infected at the base way down in your gums or your nerve is damaged and cannot be saved. Once your nerve has been taken out and the hole is cleaned well they put in a piece of material from a rubber tree. Your tooth should look pretty normal if they cap/fill it with a tooth colored cap/filling. Talk to your dentist and let him know your concerns. I am sure he did the best he could and to save your tooth this is what he has to do.

Root canals are done IN the root and you cannot see them. Crowns and fillings are done above the gum line. That's what you will see. That will be done after the root canal is done. It is a microscopic procedure done inside the root. Everything is still there, except the tiny nerve chamber (the size of a straight pin) inside the root. It is cleaned and filled with rubber to an exact dimension and diameter of about .3-.8mm. (It's a complex procedure, but that's what's done.)
