I can feel your pain; you need wheels to get to work and because you've been unemployed you don't have a lot to spend. There are cars out there that can meet your needs, but don't expect much: you're looking at old beaters with a lot of miles on them. Best bet is to stick to an economy model (so it'll be easy on gas) and think Japanese or Korean since their quality is best in the age range you'll be looking at. If you're handy as a mechanic that will help loads. Living in California there will be some older models on the road since you don't face a rust problem; but rubber gaskets will be a failure point due to heat. Last recommendation: check out some reviews of a car on the Internet before you buy it, recommend Edmond's for those.

I seriously doubt that any respectable dealer would handle a $1000 car. You are probably going to have to find an individual selling a car for that price and forego the dealer.

Call around to the real estate attorneys. The ones that do probate of wills. Sometimes you can find a decent car that wasn't left in a "Will" for next to nothing. The kids don't want it and they just want what money they can get quickly out of it. Bank repos on older cars, sometimes the bank just needs to clean off it's lot. Check with local junkyards. Sometimes they will tinker around with some junk and make decent cars they will sell for cheap. Many will have :"salvage titles" so you can get a decent car for next to nothing. Have a friend who bought one in San Diego. $800 for 2002 Saab that looks and drives like a $10,000 car.

Most dealers in my area start their used cars at $2995 or so. Sometimes you can walk in and ask to see their "just traded" section. The cars won't be shiny or clean but you might be able to make a cash offer if you find one you like. Check either the classifieds or Craigslist, the bulletin board at your local grocery store or church / community center, and just ask around. I would shoot for an old 80s Toyota Corolla or Camry, Geo Prizm, a four-cylinder Mustang, a compact Toyota/Nissan pickup, or any GM mid-size with the 2.8 or 3.1L V6 engine. If you can find an S-10 or Ranger pickup with the four-cylinder engine that hasn't been ragged out too badly, those could also be good bets. Basically, you're looking for something with an engine / transmission combo that were made for a long time the same way. Not only will the spares be cheaper and easier to find, but more people will know how to fix them when they do go wrong.

If I were you I would look on craigslist. I've never seen or heard of any actual dealer selling a car for that little.
