Thanks for the A2A. I havent done an internship in an academic environment but still let me suggest whatever I have learnt seeing my brother apply. As Tanay mentioned, keep track of various summer programs offered by these institutions and apply accordingly. Another way to try for the same is to search for professors whose work interests you. Write to them in the month of feb/march, the email should cover topics like the relevant courses taken by you, any prior research work done, previous internships, papers of the professor which interest you and how you can contribute.
