personally you could get a loan with low interest rates and build your credit up along with paying cash for a vehicle so you both are happy. Although it is better to buy a car without a bank loan the loan is still a option and i plan on getting a small loan soon. Expect 1500 to 2500 for a running decent vehicle and if you could maybe consider getting a cheaper motorcycle to save up for a decent car.
