Why doesn't The Economist app allow its iPhone users to click on the texts of their articles?

  • As a non-english speaker, iPhone's built-in dictionary is very useful to read some english written articles. The problem is, The Economist app doesn't allow its users to use a define function iPhone provides by prohibiting clicking on the texts of its articles. Why so?

    Adding dictionary look-up to the apps is a feature we've often considered. I'm not sure whether there's a technical reason why we haven't added it, or whether we've simply decided that other features are more important. I've asked the head of our app team and will let you know what he says. Update January 8th: This is indeed on our list of features to add to the app, quite near the top. We've just been busy fixing other things (support for iPhone 5, fixing page-swipe bugs, etc). Stay tuned!

I am also wanting for "define". Dear Tom, you said "near the top". Almost one year latter, now I guess The Economist IT enhancement schedule is something very confuse... Say to Apple and Google Android to stop with technological improvements in order to give time to companies and users to adapt... This is the problem with tech sector that forgot  listening clients.

Hi Tom, I have been using The Economist app for iphone and for ipad. Dictionary function works for iphone but not for ipad app. I have looked online for the remedy before coming across this thread. Kindly do tell me if there is something i need to do to add dictionary in  ipad app.

Almost two years have past, and the android version still does not offer text selection or dictionary. Very disappointed.
