What is senior year like in a Japanese high school?
-
Is it like here in America where it's the most relaxed year or is it the most stressful year, filled with huge exams?
-
Answer:
Super stressful. First semester, kids are trying to pack in memories with their clubs as well as study for the last year of school. Then, from second semester, many start juku if they don't already go. It's study-study-study until the entrance exams or Center Test (unless they manage to get in on a recommendation). And then there is THE FUTURE looming over them like a giant dark cloud. Everything depends on these tests. There are "ronin" who take the test again the next year, but people try to pass the first year so as not to waste a year of their lives spinning their wheels.

I just wanted to add an experience I had in Berkeley, Calif. I had a habit of putting in a few coins in parking meters that were expired or about to be. That was the situation, when a Japanese young man came up and asked me why I did that. (It was his car.) I explained that I hated to see people get tickets...He was amazed and we started talking. As it turned out, his parents lived in Japan and I asked why he was going to High School here in the States. He explained that in Japan, any student that misbehaved (or got bad marks) was struck/beaten with a rod or stick. He said that he had fought back and was expelled. That was sometime ago, and I don't know if that's common now...but, having lived in Japan for a year in 1955, I know that education is very important to parents and their children--and discipline was important.

Very busy. They need to get good grades so they can get into the college of choice.

Generally, they have to study for college entrance exams in senior year. So it must be stressful as you say. But we have a "closing trip" in senior year. That is a big trip lasting usually a few days which is held only once in high school. And it's usually in senior year. So there are some good events. And some high schools are in the same group with a college. That means, kids going to that kind of high school can go to their college without an exam after high school. In that case, they do not have to prepare for entrance exam. So it depends on each kid.
