I don't think there is a way to make your friends list private. You can make your profile private. This allows you and only the people you're friends with to see your pictures,friends, etc. The only way people can see your stuff is if you accept them as a Facebook friend or are already friends with them. To do this i think you have to go into Account Settings or something like that.
