What exactly is an outline for an essay?

An outline is, just as it sounds, an "outline" of what you are going to do in the paper. For example: I. Introduction A. Thesis II. Body Paragraph 1 A. argument 1. evidence B. argument 1. evidence 2. evidence . . . (VII). Conclusion You fill in the basic information, sources, arguments, evidence, etc. that you will use in the paper. There is no specific length an outline has to be, but since it is only a 10 page paper, I would suggest no more than 5 pages.

Hi, the outline of an essay is just the topics/ subtitles/ points you want to discuss in your essay. Say you are writing an essay on your hobby ( overly simple example, I know), you would probably begin by defining it, then you would probably say why there are important, then you would probably describe your own. So the outline could look like: 1. Definition of hobby: 2. Importance of having hobbies: 3. My hobbies: etc......... You might consider adding a line or two under each subtitle just to show the teacher that you are progressing. That is exactly why teachers demand outlines, to get an idea of your work and also to ensure that you are not waiting for the last moment to come up with something.
