    1) You don't need to, but if you don't change from #s to bs you end up with needlessly complex keys. Nobody would write a piece in A#major. 2) Because if you don't add the flat sign you are playing the wrong note, B and Bb are two totally different notes. Explain that a 5th is 7 semitones, not 5 NOTES (although it often IS 5 white notes) and ask them to compare the sound of G - D and B - F natural, then B - F# 3) It's not down 4 semitones, it's down 3 - if you want to think of it as 4 then you don't move on the first one, meaning it's not DOWN at all. C to A is C to B - 1, B to Bb - 2, Bb to A - 3. Think of the 'sad trombone' (if you play it you should hear it!)
