  • Discuss the concept of "color depth". What is/are the advantage(s) of High color depth vs. Low Color depth?

  • Answer:

The concept of color depth is simple really. When it comes to computers, it is also called bit depth. In other words, it's the amount of data used to express the colors of an image. The more data used to express the colors, the more accurate the image representation is compared to the original. Similar to a book: the more words you are allowed to use to describe something, the more accurate your description will be. The main disadvantage of a high color depth without compression is size. Or if you are working in inks or laser toner, the amount of ink or toner you use. Think of it this way: If you have an original image that has 1600 colors but you have to reproduce that image using a color depth of only 512 colors, think of how accurate your reproduction is going to be.
