Dental assistant start career?

I received an Corporate Credit Cards Admin Assistant job offer in a large enterprise, is it a good career start?

  • The company is one of the top-listed company in this country. It owns thousands of Employees. The finance department locates in the head-office. An Corporate Credit Cards Admin Assistant job was offered to me. As an accounting& finance graduate, should I take this offer if considering the future development? I am wondering if this is more like an admin position and this position can not guarantee me a chance to develop. Currently my long-term career objective is to become a corporate management accountant or financial controller.

Barring any contractual arrangements, there are no guarantees of any kind in the corporate world. My personal opinion is that this is not the best path to take.  A position such as this will not allow you to exercise the practical applications of the fundamental concepts your education has provided you.  It is very limited in nature, from an accounting perspective, particularly if the position is not within the accounting department (it sounds like it is not). My recommendation would be to start off as a staff accountant in the accounting department, which will likely provide you with a wider range of responsibilities.  Additionally, you may be crossed trained in areas outside of your direct responsibilities, which will provide further practical experience.  Prove you are a good accountant and promotions to greater responsibilities will follow, which may eventually lead to the junior and mid-level management levels.  Keep in mind I said this is not the best path to take.  That is not the same thing as saying it is necessarily the wrong path.  It is entirely possible that you will take this position and excel, creating information and value to the company that went beyond their initial expectations.  If this happens, you will be considered one who thinks outside the box and is worthy of being offered greater accounting responsibilities, when the opportunity presents itself.  That is a also a perfectly plausible scenario. Much of how your career unfolds depends on you as an individual. Your ability to eventually rise to a senior (financial) management or controller level will depend upon your ability to effectively manage large groups of people, strong leadership, communications skills, technical and systems abilities, providing value to department heads outside of your area, consistently meeting (group) deadlines, producing high quality work, cost control procedures and implementing effective internal controls, among other things.  Don't worry about these things right now, though.  You are only at the beginning stages of your journey.

It is definitely worth going on the interview. The most important thing is getting a first job where you can learn. You should definitely ask them if this role will give you exposure to the accounting department. You should also ask whether there will be growth and what the day to day responsibilities are, and why the position is open. I personally think that taking an admin job can (and has) lead to many amazing careers, but there are some administrative jobs where there is no upward movement, it's only performing the (heavy load) of administrative work. If you're straight out of school, and have no internships in a corporate setting (or work in a corporate setting) then you'll need to get something corporate on your resume. However, you ideally want a role where you can take on more projects in addition to your administrative work, and move up (whether in the company or outside of it.) Most HR managers are pretty honest about whether or not an admin role has room for growth or not. Of course, I would make an appointment with your Career Advisor from your school, or someone who you know who has more insider knowledge of the industry, all of this is subject to your background and specific criteria to the industry.
