Answer:
In the old days, you "submitted" your site to the SE's. In today's world, the "spiders" find you. The fastest way for this to happen is to get links to your site. Submit your site to free directories (like DMOZ), participate in industry related forums or social sites, link from Facebook, create a Facebook page, link from Twitter - basically just get the word out in as many ways as you can. Press releases that also contain links are a good plan as well. Once that happens, you'll see your hits from the SE's increase quickly. You can also add quality, original content to your site which will serve as "link bait" and also help you get ranked in the search engines. Hope this helps! Blair S.

There is a vast difference with search engine submission and directory submission. 1) Submitting your site to search engines like Google, MSN etc will get your site indexed in the search engines. 2) Submission to directories like Yahoo Directory, DMOZ will yield you better authority back links and traffic.

It's true that most spiders will actually pick up your website quite shortly after it's been created, given you actually advertise it somewhere (i.e. social media - Facebook, Digg, Delicious ...) However, to speed up the process, you still have the option to submit your website to Google and Yahoo! manually. I would do this as a priority. Link to Google: http://www.google.com/addurl/ Link to Yahoo!: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites Note: I couldn't find a page submit site on Yahoo!, so I opted-in for Yahoo! account and then used their Site Explorer to add my website there and let the search engine know it does exist :) Other than that, I would probably submit it to local search engines (different countries have different local search engines - you'll need to do a search for that) Hope this helps.
You can't "submit" a website to a search engine unless you pay them and become a sponsor. It should appear when you search for it in detail.
