How to learn web design online?

With sophisticated web design software available - often for free (such as Wix) - is it worthwhile to learn how to design and develop web sites?

• Clearly there is still value in writing web services.  However, it seems like the available software is making web design a useless skill.  With a day or so of practice, even an inexperienced child could create a nice looking web site.

  For anything other than the most basic websites, wix and other similar service is simply too restrictive. Additionally, the purpose behind web design in general versus services such as wix, is that learning web design allows complete creative freedom to create something that does not yet exist. The purpose of wix et al is to create a narrow band of types of websites (personal homepages, blogs, small web stores etc.) as easily as possible.
