When running a Facebook contest, should you require the user to "like" the page, before they can view the tab which allows them to enter the contest?
-
If a non-fan views the tab which 'contains' the contest, it shows a message asking them to "like" the page before they can enter. The goal of the contest is to gain Facebook followers and to - hopefully - have an actual fan win the contest instead of just someone who wants free stuff. In theory, if you are entering to win something free, it's not asking too much to Like that page to be able to enter. Agree/disagree? Thoughts?

Make them like and then share your page on their timeline. That will yield even more likes and extend your reach.

If you want to grow your fan base, this is a great way and you should also ask your fans to install an application. This usually deters most prize hunters and can also easily identify cheaters. Check out this blog post - http://www.agorapulse.com/blog/how-to-make-sure-your-facebook-contest-or-promotion-attracts-genuine-fans But the best part is that Agorapulse is not only to contest apps! For $29/month, you have access to a ton of Facebook page management features such as: Timeline content management (with team workfow) Automated moderation Scheduled publishing (Facebook and Twitter) Competitors benchmark Advanced statistics Great performance reports Fan ranking Fan CRM (tag them, gather their emails, etc.) Exportable Fan database and many more

It depends on the goals of your contest, but I tend to require this.

We wrote about this a while back...if the messaging is clear (and aligned with the elements to follow), go for it. Let the browser know what the gates are going to be in a straightforward fashion; don't have them click and then ask for the like. http://fbppc.com/how-to/how-to-run-like-incentive-fb-campaigns-part-2-construction-tips/
