The biggest thing you need are links on other sites pointing to your blog... Google will find these links, follow them and crawl your blog. Google should pick up most sites in some form or another in less than a week. Concentrate on links and content and you'll be sweet. Also, if you're running Wordpress, the Google Sitemaps plugin suggested in one of the other answers is an excellent thing to use. It'll make sure Google knows where all your pages are and tell Google about them each time you make a new post - good plugin to be using.
