  • Answer:

It is possible to double major and finish in four years. Many majors have overlapping courses and may only differ by a couple of courses. Minors are more specific concentrations of a subject but don't necessarily have to be related to the major. They also require fewer courses. My wife completed 3 majors and a minor in 4 years. She also took a lot of summer courses.

My daughter took a double major in Economics and Political Science. She did it in four years by taking 3 courses during each of two summers. Even though she did end up with 16 credits more than she needed to graduate. And an EMT certificate as well. A minor is something that you take is a totally different field to become a more well rounded person. They serve little purpose in the market My daughter made hers history because she wanted to learn more about the Viet Nam war,

Honestly, any answer you get here is not necessarily going to be the right one. You really have to talk to your academic adviser at your university. Yes, some people finish Bachelor Degrees in 3 years, or a semester early. But they work incredibly hard. More people take 5+ years to finish. Adding a 2nd major can be easy or incredibly difficult depending on your school. Some majors at some universities require passing certain classes before you're allowed in. Others only require you to fill out a quick piece of paper and you're in. Minors tend to be very easy to add, you just need to fill out some easy paperwork. They can also be added late in your academic career. For example, at my last university I added a minor my junior year. I hadn't taken any of the classes required for it, but I was able to finish it by graduation. At my current university (I'm in grad school) I have heard from undergrads that getting into certain majors (such as nursing, engineering, psychology, and music) require jumping through major hoops including placement exams, passing required courses, auditions etc. Yes, majors that are more similar to each other would probably take less time because some of the classes might overlap. But, again, this really depends on your specific university. Also, minors are useful in that you get trained in another discipline. It also makes your resume look much better and can really help with getting into grad school, even if it's in an unrelated field. It shows you are more well rounded and have more than one interest. It also shows that you can dedicate yourself to multiple things at once.
