I think an S-10 would be a good buy. The only real problem they have ever had was rust and sometimes they have some traction issues in the winter (but so do most light trucks). The S-10 had the option of a 2.2L inline 4 cyl(120hp) , a 4.3L V6 (165hp), and a 4.3L V6 (190hp) from 1994 to 2004. As long as you keep your foot out of it, you should get pretty good fuel economy too.
