It all depends on your video card. Most modern video cards can handle at least 2 outputs (so 2 monitors). The operating system can then distinguish between the two. So it knows what's happening on each (treating them independent of one another). So you can easily run multiple programs then. Or with laptops, many allow you to hook up an external monitor (they have a single video out port). So you can use your laptop itself as one monitor and the one you hook up as the secondary monitor.
