Private academies are accredited and can give out diplomas, while homeschooling programs are not normally tied into a formal institution and therefore can't hand out legal diplomas, so many home school students end up getting a GED. As for which method is better, it depends on what the student wants to do after high school. It's easier to get into a 4-year university with a high school diploma, but a gifted student should be able to get in by another method. Usually it involves lots of letters or recommendation from good sources and some form of transcript. 2-year colleges are easier to get into, and from a 2-year college it's fairly simple to transfer to a 4-year university. Another option is attending a middle college, which gives a student college credit for courses taken towards completing a high school diploma. It's more independent and is a great way to get through college faster and cheaper. If your student doesn't want to go to college and is going for a career that doesn't require a college degree, then a diploma doesn't really matter.
