FRAPS is really the best. You have to pay for most of them but some allow trials but you have a watermark on your videos. They take a toll on your processor and also the videos take up a lot of space.

I don't know about free, but fraps is the most commonly used one. Whilst i don't personally agree with torrents, you could download a cracked one, it records in roughly 3 Min's per go, but you can go to windows movie maker and just put them all in together and you wont see any gaps.
