Can you use any image from Google on Wikipedia?

If I make a personal web page to criticize a well-known politician, is it Fair Use for me to use potentially copyrighted images of that politician that I find on Google Image Search?

  • This is a strictly personal website; I'm not attempting to make any profit and I'm not endorsing any other candidate. Most of the pictures I've found on Google Image Search are from online news articles.

    If I were you then I will worry more about Defamation Lawsuits than copyright infringement in such cases. You will have to understand your local laws on freedom of speech. But, to just answer your question, and to the best of my knowledge, you will be violating copyright laws if you pick a picture which is not available under creative commons from google search and use it anywhere on your site.

You might get away with using the pictures if they are from news sources, IF you cite them and link back to the article they came from. Also, make it CLEAR that you are not making money off the usage (which also means there are no adwords or other ads on the page)  A dime in Adword revenue could cost you $5k. The man before me brought up Defamation lawsuits. These are based (in cases such as this) on malice. Malice is a clearly defined legal term. Be sure you understand it. If you are going to be critical then also be sure of your facts. Make sure you check them from primary sources. Do you remember the big media event back in October/September about the AP History High School courses?
