Can people actually watch movies in the Grauman's Chinese Theatre?

What was it like to go to the theatre and watch a film in the 1950s?

  • Nowadays, people use their laptops and ipads to watch movies. We all know the ability to watch movies at home online has changed the culture of movie-going. I wonder what was it like back then? Do people go to the theatre with their families? What are the reasons for doing so? How much does it cost? What is the culture like? Personal reasons? I'm currently 21 years old and I'm a film student. I would ask my parents but unfortunately, they weren't into movies at all.

  • Answer:

Going to the cinema years ago was an event.  Patrons dressed in clothing that was appropriate for an evening out. Movies didn't feature coming attractions and ads for products, but news reels and cartoons. (Most cartoons from the forties were once used in this manner as filler) Another difference was an intermission. Longer films offered the patron the chance to take a short break for the restroom.  In house concessions really didn't take off until after the late forties. But candy stores and later exterior vendors outside the cinema filled this niche.  And of course,  the average movie patron could expect to pay what we consider pocket change for drinks and all the snacks they desired. A movie ticket in the 1940s was between 24-46 cents.  In the 1950s the price varied from 37-69 cents.

They had staffers ("usherettes" in the parlance of the day) with flashlights to show you to your seat.  This was in part because people arrived throughout the running time.  Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train advertised, in an exception to this practice, that nobody would be seated during the last ten minutes (the merry-go-round scene).  Carol Burnett said she was once fired from an usherette job for observing the policy.
