    Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Hollywood Heights (formerly Holiday Inn Walk of Fame), all near Hollywood and Highland. In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced. In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. There is also a nice place in Burbank called the Best Western Media Center, very close to Warner, NBC, and Universal Studios. Best form of transportation is the car, aka the automobile. Everything is so far apart. For example, it's 12-20 miles from Santa Monica Beach to Hollywood, depending on route. Travel time is 30-60 minutes by car, 1.5-2 hours by bus. I always recommend staying close to an attraction, so you should split your time: Hollywood for some days, Anaheim for others.

Hollywood (recommended) or Downtown LA has the best transit, with multiple bus routes covering it and subway. Santa Monica is okay too but public transit can be iffy. If you live in LA it is preferable to have a car.

There is no "center of everything" in LA. Best way to get around is by driving, but only if you have nerves of steel, the patience of a saint, a good sense of direction [and a good GPS] and experience driving in heavy city traffic.
