Your old site probably had plenty of back links to relevant sites, and your site was optimized for keywords on each of your pages. If you had a company do it for you, they probably submitted your site to a list of directories, found high-ranking relevant sites to ad you link to draw more back links. Maybe they did some blog commenting or posted an article about your site on some article directories for you. Perhaps, they even did a little bit of of pay-per-click marketing with the money you paid them to do. A lot of this you can do your self. Also, it depends on how long ago you put your website up. Ten years ago, there were fewer websites and less competition on the internet. Nowadays we have billions of websites. So SEO companies saw an opportunity. The process is labor intensive, but you can do it. You must decide if you're willing to write articles, social bookmark, social network, post on blogs, classified ads, submit to directories, etc. or save time and pay someone to do it for you. Some days you would rather pay to have someone take care of that for you.
