What are the pros and cons of railroad expansion?

There really are no cons, expanding passenger and freight volume is better served by rail, more efficient, more goods and people can move in a narrower corridor than expanding highway systems, less, (far less) fuel burned and pollution. There is no other land based competing transportation system that can come close in terms of safety, amount of land used, pollution, and cost effectiveness. If the traffic is there, rail is the best way to move it, period.

I can't think of any disadvantage unless you happen to be a car manufacturer or airline operator and the railroads are developed sufficiently well to compete healthily. Advantages: lower carbon footprint for travellers; more fuel-efficient transit of passengers and freight; expansion of labour market through labour needed to build, maintain and operate rail systems; better infrastructure; all of which provides a boost to the economy. Better safety record than road transport, thus providing less of a burden for emergency and health services. Better VFM (value for money) - a $million goes a lot further in rail construction than on roads. Yes, railroad expansion gets my vote.

In one fair answer it mentions delays if tracks blocked YES I agree but on roads a multi vehicle accident, lorry rolls,fog ,snow and ice then road traffic grinds to a half also the biggest rail problem I suggest is when lines or overheads need repairs or upgrading,I feel companies take the short term options doing little, letting lines become poor then involving major costly and long time work renewing it all 247/365 services does not fit in comfortable with a first class rail service
